Overview of the President’s FY 2027 Budget Request
In Overview of the President's FY 2027 Budget Request, EducationCounsel unpacks President Trump’s recently released fiscal year 2027 budget request, including agency-specific requests for the U.S. Departments of Education, Health and Human Services, and Labor. The overview includes both key observations and a detailed table.
The budget request maintains funding for some major education programs like Title I, IDEA, Head Start, and CCDBG. But the President is requesting that Congress enact significant cuts to education funding and programs across the federal government compared to the current FY26 appropriations act recently enacted by Congress.
With the notable exception of a large increase in discretionary funding for the Pell Grant program to shore up a projected shortfall, the President’s proposed cuts to federal funding for early childhood, K-12, and higher education are equal to or in some places greater than the cuts President Trump proposed a year ago. The President’s FY27 budget proposal also continues to advance the Administration’s goal of dismantling the U.S. Department of Education.
